FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions. A FAQ is a listing of common questions and answers concerning a particular topic. Many software programs and websites contain FAQs to help their customers and visitors quickly orient themselves.



Firewall

A firewall is gateway between a private network (intranet) or individual workstation and the outside Internet. It manages the flow of communication to and from the system, blocking attempts from outside to penetrate the private area. Security measures include authentication methods, passwords and specific software and/or hardware.



Font

A font contains the information necessary to specify the size, weight and spacing of a set of characters. There are two ways to display fonts: a bitmap fomat, where each character is represented by an arrangement of dots or a vector format, where the outline of each character is defined geometrically. PostScript and TrueType are examples of vector font systems.



Frame

Frames are a formatting technique often used in web pages that make it possible for multiple HTML documents to be viewed in the same browser window. Each frame can contain a separate, scrollable html document. Frames are often used to divide a fixed menu from a scrollable content area. Since HTML 4.0 frames are part of the official HTML-specification.



FTP

File Transfer Protocol. A protocol that enables file transfers between a local system and a remote system. Before a website can "go online", the site files must be uploaded to the webserver. FTP can be started from a command prompt, a browser or by using an FTP program. Users must login with a username and password before any files can be transferred.
