Internet

A worldwide, interconnected collection of thousands of computer networks using the TCP/IP protocol. First created in the 1960s as a communication network serving military and science needs. Since the early 1990s it has developed into a mass medium. When not written with a capital i, "internet" refers to any group of interconnected networks. For comparison, see also: Extranet, Intranet, WWW

Intranet

A private network that can only be accessed by a specific user group, for example the members of a company. It is based on the TCP/IP protocol and can run all programs and services associated with the public Internet, but is for internal use only. For comparison, see: Extranet and Internet.

Image map

A graphic that serves as a navigation menu and has one or more image areas („hotspots“) defined as links. Clicking on a hotspot takes the visitor to the related page. As some visitors choose to turn off image loading in their browsers, it is a good idea to include text links in addition to the image map.

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol. Like POP, IMAP is a protocol that specifies how email is received. The difference between them lies in the way email is handled after downloading the mail. With IMAP, the user sees only the email header and can decide whether to download the entire mail at a later time or delete it from the server. An email message that has been deleted locally is still available on the web server. See also: POP, SMTP

IP address

A unique number assigned to every computer with a direct connection to the Internet. An IP address consists of four sets of numbers seperated by periods which can each have from one to three numbers between 0 and 255. Because it is difficult to remeber so many numbers, the IP address is also assigned a domain name. See also: Domain, DNS

IRC

Internet Relay Chat. A technology that allows people from all over the world to connect to the same server and hold online conversations in real time. Several programs provide graphic interfaces for use with the IRC and allow user-friendly chatting in chatrooms.

ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network. A method of sending digital data and voice signals over telephone lines. Data is sent faster and in higher quality compared to analogue lines. ISDN lines contain two channels, which when bundled together can transmit data at up to 128Kbps.

ISP

Internet Service Provider. A company which provides its customers with Internet access and a variety of related services. Subscribers can connect to the Internet by dialling into the ISP's computer network. Most ISPs sell access to their services for a monthly
fee.
